Chapter 1

Quote: For a contributing citizen to be released from the community was a final decision, a terrible punishment, and an overwhelming statement of failure. (p. 4)

Reaction: They really take rule braking seriously and failure, wow. But I wonder what they mean by being released.
It sounds kind of peaceful to be released. I wonder if it means there usually confined somewhere good,
And when they get released it means something like H E double hockey sticks. So far I think I wouldn't want to live there because of
This whole release thing.

Chapter 2

Quote: "But to be honest, Jonas," his father said, "for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your Ceremony. Because I was already fairly certain of what my Assignment was to be."

Reaction: Assignment does that mean that they only get one job for their entire life I don't think I could stand that.
The problem is I think I would get so bored that I would explode. I guess it would be okay for a little bit. But at least in
The real world we don't have to do that. They (even though their not real) have to do it every day. That would get nauseating. ----

Chapter 3

The apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air, he remembered. Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere. The same nondescript shade. (p. 2

Reaction: How could it change there's now other way. Well except the color but it can't change from
Red, yellow, or green in an instant. Can it. Maybe since they’re so weird they eat "special apples."
There's an apple on the cover. I wonder if that has anything do with it. I think they even might be some
Special religion or cult.

Chapter 4

What happens when they make the actual release? Where exactly did Roberto go? (p. 32)

Reaction: I feel the same as Jonas curious and wondrous. If you ask me were both acting like
Scooby and the gang. That's been one of the questions that keep coming up different times in each chapter.
When we find out what it is it will either be terribly sad, funny that we worried, or something
We can relate to in our own society.

Chapter 5

You're ready for the pills, that's all. That's the treatment for stirrings.

Reaction: so basically he's getting the same feelings as the guys we see in the hall
After school making' on their girlfriends. I guess the pills are supposed to either reduce
The feelings or make them go away. Hey maybe someone should offer that idea to the nurse.

Chapter 6

It was as if the first Caleb were returning. (p. 43)

reaction:aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh! That is o sad a poor innocent baby drowned in our society people would
Probably go into depression. But in this society that just chant his name and replace him.
That’s cruel how can you just replace a life. YOU CAN'T even worse a whole generation has just been demolished.
Actually now that I think about it also means not a generation of weirdoes. But still very sad.

Chapter 7

He couldn't seem to stop, though for each lapse the discipline wand came again, escalating to a series of painful lashes that left marks on Asher's legs. Eventually, for a period of time, Asher stopped talking altogether, when he was a Three.

Reaction: when you’re under five you shouldn't even know what a beating is. And if you do first should come a timeout.
Asher is only two, that means for two years on study time he's supposed to know every rule and follow them.
Poor baby and then he were so scared that he took a vow of silence. A silent three years old I cant even imagine that.
There usually such chatter boxes at that age.

Chapter 8
Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory (p. 57)

Reaction: a receiver of memory why can’t they just do it themselves the lazy bum's
It’s a population of about 4,000 people. How on earth will you remember everything?
I don't think the human mind can hold all that information. Unless they’re not human.
Which is possible.

Chapter 9
But his parents looked blank. "We don't know."

Reaction: a person just tossed away. This place is insane. I admit it's not good to feel resource forever
But you can't just not care. This is a human beings life were talking about not a carnival fish. Why would
You want to forget anyway. Wouldn't you want those happy times in your heart forever?
You cry a little that the persons gone in person don’t mean they can't still be with you.

Chapter 10
I thought there were only us. I thought there was only now. (p. 74)

Reaction: all this time he didn't know there was something beyond his community.
They really must be isolated. I wonder if the people on the outside know about there little community.
Probably not because people, not knowing what really goes on might get mad that they don't have there piece.
But they don't have an army so most would die.

Chapter 11
"Why don't we have snow, and sleds, and hills?"

Reaction: yaw why don't they have that stuff. I think every kid should have a snow experience
It’s so much fun to do that stuff. Why can’t they change? Or at least show their personality. I think kids should have as much creativity as they can get and experience love.
experience

Chapter 12
"We shouldn't have!" Jonas said fiercely (p. 91)

Reaction: I don’t see why they have to do these things. How could any of us think to live like this and for them it's been years since theirs been any change. Its crazy. This isn't even real and it’s getting me so mad everything is so wrong there.

Chapter 13
"We really have to protect people from wrong choices."

Reaction: I think people should make their own choices because when we do make wrong choices we learn from them. If that was eliminated then we wouldn't learn and that would create a dumber society. And then children would be born and not learn so that would make even dumber generations.

Chapter 14
Would it grow up Elsewhere, not knowing, ever, that in this community lived a being who looked exactly the same? (p. 109)

Reaction: twins that don't know each other and meet is cool, but when one is killed because of its weight.
Is just sad. But its not like we don't do the same thing in our society what with abortions and all. There have been
Some cases in our society, where a mother can't take care of two babies and picks one. I don't like that much better
But that's what happens and we have to live with it.

Chapter 15
The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. "Forgive me, " he said.

Reaction: I don't feel bad about it because if this is what it takes to be the next giver, Jonas should suck it
Up and do his new job. Sure it hurts but eventually all work hurts weather it’s mental or physical. It might sound
Mean now but it'll be good in the long run

Chapter 16
"And they won't be part of my life anymore . . . And they'll be well cared for and respected." (p. 118)

Reaction: The care for and respect part sounds good but the never be part of my life thing is heart breaking.
I think since I do know most of my family I can't imagine not seeing them and not caring about it.
But the weird thing is he knows his parents, has feelings, and still doesn't care. Ithink he's being a little rude or
abusing his feeling ability.

Chapter 17
"Then I wave bye-bye," he said, in the special sweet voice he used when he spoke to the new child.

Reaction: It seems like at least there's one good thing in this society. Now why can't we find more stuff good
at first it seemed like they found a way to solve every problem but when you read and get towards the end
it sounds like things are worse.

Chapter 18-19
No quotes. Just free write your reaction to chapter 19 for 5 minutes and include that with your journal.

Reaction:wow this is the part were everything is understood I can't believe all the twists. some are sad some are amusing
but there all surprising.

Chapter 20
"Her name was Rosemary."

Reaction: If rosemary is his daughter that means he watched his daughter kill herself. I'm so mad at Jonas. How dare he say she wasn't brave
It sounds to me like she was the bravest in the community. If only she made it through training. She would be first in the giver hall of fame.
I didn't even know receivers could have daughters. I wonder if he had a crush like jonas and wanted to have a family when he was Jonas's age.

Chapter 21
"First thing tomorrow morning."

Reaction: The giver is acting just like Ryan Secrest. The most suspenseful time in the show and he says after the break. It's so misleading
it's unbearable. It's really getting good now.

Chapters 22-23
Reaction I think that they made it to the town and were taken in by somebody for christmas.and lived happily ever after.
